As an academic press, the mission of City University of Hong Kong Press is to promote scholarship and disseminate knowledge. We publish three types of publication: academic works, professional books and books of general interest.

The publication policy of the Press is established by the university but follows international publishing practice. An Editorial Subcommittee, established under the University Press Committee, makes the final decision on publication.

Academic books are works of original research likely to contribute significantly to their relevant field. Submissions of this nature are subjected to peer review by authorities in the subject area before the project can be submitted to the Editorial Subcommittee. The subcommittee’s decision will be based largely on the strength of the reviews. The publication timeline is dependent on the review time. We generally try to complete this in three months, but occasionally the process can take much longer. During this time authors will be kept informed of progress.

For professional books and books of general interest, we normally request the table of contents of the project together with one or two sample chapters. The project will be reviewed in-house, but in some circumstances we will seek additional reviews. If both parties find the project viable, then it will be submitted to the Editorial Subcommittee for formal approval.

Once the subcommittee accepts a manuscript for publication, our editors will work closely with the author to produce a polished book as soon as possible. Depending on the complexity of the book, the production cycle will take between six to twelve months from the point of receipt of the complete manuscript to publication.

A contract dealing with copyright, royalties and the timeframe of publication will be concluded between the Press and the author at an appropriate time after the formal approval of publication by the University.
